The Knitting All Around Stitch Dictionary 150 new stitch patterns to knit top down bottom up back and forth in the round Wendy Bernard 9781617691959 Books Reviews
- This is an absolute must-have for all knitters! Don't know why no one had ever thought of this before, but I sure am glad that Wendy Bernard did. I brought this book to my Knitting Group and 8 people ordered it on the spot! The book shows stitch patterns flat, in the round, bottom up and top down and is a fantastic resource. If you are like me and have wondered how to translate a flat pattern into a circular one, then this book is for you.
- As an avid knitter, I love stitch dictionaries and this one is excellent. It's ring bound and will stay open to any page you choose without fuss.
The book is divided up into chapters on knit and purl; ribs; twisted, slipped and fancy; cables; lace; mosaics. At the end of each chapter is a pattern. I don't know who chose the patterns, but I find them singularly unattractive except for the toque. Some of them are downright weird.
I recommend this book solely for the stitch dictionary part. Forget about the patterns. - This is a great book that beginner and experienced knitters will enjoy. Practice the stitches - use swatches to make hot/cold pads, continue on and make the swatches longer and turn into scarves or stitch together to make afghans! Clear instructions and well illustrated. Definitely recommend.
- SUPER BOOK! HIGHLY recommended! If you want to do simple wash cloths or do a blanket w/patchwork squares, this is the book for you! It has both charts to read and then the patterns as well. If you're not good at reading the charts, as I am, then this book will tell you the pattern. I can't recommend it enough! It also tells you how to do the pattern in the round, on circular needles. It also tells you if the pattern is the same on the front of it as the back! LOTS of GOOD info! It's a nice hard back book w/a spiral spine. So it's easy to use and you can use it on a book stand!
I got lucky and it came w/I a week of ordering! - The collection of stitch patterns, some of which contain charts as well as written instructions, is a good adjunct to other stitch pattern books (the best being Barbara Walker's Treasuries volumes 1 and 2). Any seasoned knitter, after all, can draw her own charts, even if it does take a bit of time away from actually knitting - and a novice knitter should learn the principles of charting (this book will help with that). But when one wants to pick up one's needles, yarn, and start a project, be it bottom up or top down, in the round or flat, it's pleasant to have some stitches already written out and charted, especially those stitches which have uneven numbers of knit or purl stitches before or after the * * repeats. Dividing the pattern type (simple knit/purl combinations, cables, lace, and mosaic among others) by different yarn colors is also a helpful chapter divider. There are no new stitch patterns here, but the welcome addition of charts for some makes the book a worthwhile purchase with a discount coupon or as a gift, I suspect tge author will produce more volumes of more stitches in the future.
I like the ring binder physical structure of the book. This makes the pages like flat during use. The hard cover is studt and protective. I recommend that future volumes offer slots inside the covers for loose pages. I also recommed the author explain that knit stitches tend to be wider than tall, so that the novice charter can draw herself more accurate representations of how a pattern will look after several repeats. - This book introduced me to a new idea any stitch pattern must be constructed in a different order to achieve the result you want. An item knitted from the top down approaches a stitch pattern from a different position than the same item knitted from the bottom up. This was one of those ideas that is really basic, but one that had never occurred to me.
- I bought this book because I enjoyed the first book by the same author, the Up, Down and All Around stitch dictionary. This is another great resource for knitters. It takes a lot of guesswork out of trying to convert stitch patterns from in-the-round to flat and vice versa. The book has a spiral binding, so pages lay flat. It is organized into categories, such as cables, colorwork and ribs. Stitch patterns that are truly reversible or look good (but different) on both sides have a notation stating so.
- Wendy Bernard's Books come with a fresh look, modern photography, well laid out, perfectly documented and are a great take on some classic and new(er) stitch patterns. What really got me love and cheris her books the most though is the amazing layout, the way you can fold them over (spiral bound) makes them a treasure, and absolutely amazing and wonderful to work with!
