- We ordered our copy from the publishers site [...] and it was beautifully inscribed by the illustrator. The story of the loving monk visits with his animals throughout his busy day asking them what work towards their salvation they will be doing and eventually he is visited by Nikola, who would rather be a monk than a boy with chores. The lesson the monk has for Nikola is that we must strive to do what we are called to do, Mary and Christ are with us there. The Hungarian terms for the Theotokos, cassock and grandfather are used and the translation is found in the glossary. As an Orthodox, I found the monastic, the secluded life he led and the family icon corner to be relatable to our other children stories and home. This is another sweet and charming book by this creative duo and we have all three. St. Felix may be our favorite (perhaps because it was released first) but this comes in a close second.
- With each page I turned and each new sentence I read, my mind was filling with discussions and activities I could do with my kids as an extension of this story. I enjoyed the way the author weaved the importance of completing our simple, daily tasks with how we "work out our salvation", which is something I think many of us forget are, in fact, connected. I think too often we associate progress with the ability to complete something grand and impressive when in reality the biggest and most impressive progress is made in the seemingly small things we do and the virtues that are acquired through this process. I'm looking forward to reading this book over and over again to my children!
- Wonderful Story wonderfully illustrated.
